Having ALS has its set of daily challenges. However, my communication aid device, affectionately named "Talky," introduced a whole new level of adventure. Recently, Talky after an update included a minor glitch. I like to think of it as 'Digital Tourette's.' It started inserting random, nonsensical phrases into my speech. It turned ordinary conversations into episodes of unintended comedy.
One of the most memorable moments happened during a video call with my old college friends. We were reminiscing about our university days. We shared stories and caught up on life's ups and downs. I was about to share a heartfelt memory. I was using Talky to communicate my thoughts.
What I intended to say was, "Those nights studying under the stars were some of the best of my life." However, what Talky transmitted was, "Those nights studying under the stars with the llamas were some of the best of my life."
The confusion was immediate. The screen filled with puzzled faces. They were trying to recall any instance involving llamas during our college years. It took me a moment to realize what had happened. Once I did, I couldn't stop laughing. Or rather, Talky couldn't. It translated my silent laughter into a series of quacks. Yes, quacks. Because why laugh like a human when you can sound like a duck, right?
That moment of absurdity broke any barriers of distance and time between us. We laughed until our sides hurt. We reminisced not just about the past, but also created a new, unforgettable memory. This was courtesy of Talky's unexpected sense of humor.
From that day on, "Llama Nights" became a running joke among us. It's a reminder that sometimes, life's glitches bring us the most joy. As for Talky, I think it's earned its place as the most entertaining communication device there is. It even has digital Tourette's.
